Lean on Me Lean on Me Believe it or not, stop-smoking strategies aren't just for smokers. Even if you don't smoke, you can use these strategies to help a friend or family member quit. In fact, if loved ones are trying to quit smoking, your friendship may be just what they need to succeed. "It's very important that smokers have someone rooting for them," says Leonard Jason, Ph.D., professor of clinical and community psychology at DePaul University in Chicago. "Several studies demonstrate that this support greatly improves the chance that they'll quit for good." So how do you lend a constructive hand? "You don't need to remind them that smoking is bad for their health. They already know that," says Dr. Jason. "You simply need to be in their corner." Here, some advice for allies: 1. Start talking. Ask how they feel about smoking. Does it make them upset or angry? Do they feel out of control? If you were a former smoker, share what helped you quit. Then ask if you can do anything for them. Offer to come along when they buy smoking cessation products and review the guidebook and instructions. 2. Remain positive. The worst thing you can do is insult their habit. So instead of pointing out that smoking is "filthy or disgusting," compliment them that their breath or appearance has improved since they've been smoke-free. 3. Celebrate success. Go out to dinner or do something special to commemorate each smoke-free week. Just don't pick a place where you'll see a lot of people smoking, because it may undermine your efforts. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` ========> 3. Less Stress = More Success Having a hard time kicking the habit? Maybe you're just too stressed. Renowned physician Dean Ornish, M.D., believes that the first step to successful quitting involves balancing your life and the stressors in it. "Everyone knows smoking is bad for your health" says Dr. Ornish. "But that isn't enough for some people to quit. You have to address your underlying stress, anxiety and loneliness." Try his tension-taming techniques: Bend an ear: "When we perceive ourselves as isolated and alone, we are likely to feel chronically stressed," says Dr. Ornish. Simply discussing your problems, fears and concerns with a friend or family member can lower your stress level. Take a breather: Sign up for yoga or do the breathing, stretching and visuali- zation techniques outlined in Dr. Ornish's book Love and Survival. Yoga not only helps you manage stress, but, Dr. Ornish says, "These techniques were designed for something much greater-as tools for transformation." Reconnect with nature: Try one of Dr. Ornish's suggestions-lie down and look at the sky, turn on some music or spend time in nature listening to the sounds.
