Quitting smoking is a big task, and like any big task, it's most easily accomplished if it's broken up into small pieces. We're going to break the process of becoming a nonsmoker into three phases: before you quit, the day you quit, and after you quit. Here we go, one step at a time! Become aware of your smoking behavior These tips will help you identify your reasons for smoking. It is also important to give some thought to your mood and the situations in which you usually smoke. Each time you light up a cigarette, think about... Where you are? What you are doing? Who you are with? How you are feeling? Cut down gradually. Smoke fewer cigarettes each day or only smoke them halfway down. Inhale less often and less deeply. Change your smoking routines. Keep your cigarettes in a different place. Smoke with your opposite hand. Don't do anything else while smoking. Limit smoking to certain places, such as outside. Get ready for your Quit Day... Print out and fill in your Quit Day Checklist (found below) and hang it up where you will see it first thing in the morning (like on the bathroom mirror or on the refrigerator door). Write down your special reasons for quitting and carry them around in your purse or wallet. Read them when temptation strikes. Tell your family, friends, and co-workers that you are quitting, so they can help: Identify main support people at home, work, and other places you spend time. Ask your spouse or a friend to quit with you. On the night before your Quit Day, get rid of all your smoking stuff! Do a real house-cleaning. Throw away your cigarettes, your lighters, and your ashtrays at home, in your car, and at work. On My Quit Day... (1) I WILL NOT SMOKE.
