It could be a lot fewer than you think. A University of Massachusetts study published in the British journal Tobacco Control finds that signs of nicotine addiction can begin a few weeks ? and in some cases a few days ? after starting smoking. In the study, researchers tracked the smoking habits of 681 12- and 13-year-olds in Massachusetts starting in 1998. Over the course of the study, 95 kids said they had started smoking at least one cigarette a month. The researchers found that 60 of the smokers exhibited signs of nicotine addiction, including cravings, needing to smoke more for the same effect, withdrawal symptoms and loss of control over the amount they smoked and the duration of smoking, The Associated Press reports. A quarter of these started to show the signs of addiction within two weeks of starting to smoke. Several even said they experienced symptoms within days of starting smoking. The researchers also found that kids did not have to smoke on a daily basis to experience signs of becoming addicted to nicotine. This is a departure from the common assumption that addiction comes from smoking lots of cigarettes over a long period of time, the AP says. The researchers say their study may shed light on the biology of nicotine addiction, including a possible genetically-linked susceptibility. They theorize that smokers may fall into three categories: those who become addicted very quickly, those who develop an addiction gradually over time, and those who appear to be able to smoke intermittently or lightly without becoming addicted. The researchers say it could also be that adolescents may be more sensitive to nicotine than older people and so become addicted more quickly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How to stay smokeless! Giving up any habit isn't easy. Here are some ideas, adapted from the National Cancer Institute and other sources, on how to keep from lighting up. Once you've quit: ¡Put it in writing. Why do you want to quit? Write it down in a letter to yourself and refer to it frequently. ¡Buy flowers. They smell nicer than smoke. ¡Go to the dentist and get your teeth cleaned. Use mouth wash. Brush your teeth after each meal. Get to the point where anything other than a fresh, smokeless taste tastes just plain bad. ¡If you?re used to having a smoke with your coffee or cocktail, avoid those drinks for now. More healthful alternatives: Fruit juices and water. ¡Keep your money. Take the cash you normally would have spent on a pack or carton of cigarettes and squirrel it away until you?ve saved enough to buy yourself something nice. ¡Keep your fingers busy. Part of the ritual of smoking is to have that comforting little cancer stick smoldering away in your tobacco-stained fingers. Find something else to fiddle with, like a ball-point pen (the clicking types are particularly gratifying for you nervous types). Use it to do the New York Times crossword puzzle. Needlework is an artistically satisfying alternative. ¡Stick a straw in it. Smoking is orally gratifying. Chew on a plastic straw instead. Toothpicks work, too. ¡Go where smoking isn?t permitted. There are lots of places, like public libraries, museums, many stores and malls. Don?t forget houses of worship. You?ll need all the help you can get. ¡Hang with the non-smokers. If you?re at a party, palling around with the cigarette crowd will only lead you into temptation. When the urge is overpowering: ¡Bite into a healthful, crunchy treat. Celery stalks, apple slices and carrot sticks will take the bite out of the craving. ¡Hit the showers. Taking a shower or bath will relax you. ¡Use some basic relaxation exercises. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Try to relax your muscles as you concentrate on a peaceful image, like sunset at the beach or rocking your child or grandchild to sleep. ¡Whatever you do, don?t give in. You?ll be tempted to "just have one." Chances are, it will become the first one of many more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Take care and have a great week!
